Riva Leone, Barbera 2021

Riva Leone draws its name from a historic early-20th-century wine merchant in northern Italy. Today’s Riva Leone wines are made in a modern winery in Priocco (Piedmont), combining traditional grape heritage with contemporary, efficient winemaking. Their Barbera bottlings aim for quality and drinkability; a modern take on classic Piedmontese red. Deep ruby with a lively garnet rim. The 2021 Barbera is fermented in stainless steel then aged 12 months in a mix of American and French oak. On the nose: vibrant red cherry, sour cherry, dark berry and a hint of spice. The palate shows juicy red-berry fruit, blackberry and plum, with fresh acidity, moderate tannins and a smooth, fruity finish. Medium-bodied and versatile. Ideal with pasta, pizza or grilled pork.
